There is a lot more to Porto Petro and Mallorca than "Sun, Sand & Sangria", but let's start with that.
Climate: Hot and sunny in the summer; cooler but still pleasant in the winter. Actually, the sun shines every day but cloud gets in the way on about 60 days a year. However, don't take our word for it. Check out this web site on Mallorca's Climate. You'll have plenty of opportunity to use the terraces, pool and
BBQ.
Beaches: There are two just a few minutes walk from the villa but many more within a 30 minute drive. There is a ferry which leaves regularly from the harbour that will take you to the fantastic cove beaches of Cala Mondrago.
Eating Out must be a priority. Porto Petro, despite its small size, has a number of worthwhile eating places. Here are our suggestions. When you find more, let us know.
There are a number of restaurants that line the harbour front. A walk to the roundabout at the head of the inlet will bring you to "Restaurante Maritimo". With a charming and personal atmosphere about it, the staff are most attentive, always friendly and helpful, and speak the 3 main languages used on the island.
The food is very good and reasonably priced with specials rotating weekly, so you are almost guaranteed to find something to your taste and budget.
On the other side of the harbour, perched overlooking the marina, there is "Restaurante Rafael y Flora" which also serves fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. Try the Lenguado (Lemon Sole). You will find the owner most helpful for he welcomes returning customers as if they are part of his family.
Diving: Porto Petro also offers the more adventurous visitor two diving centres; one in Mondrago Park and the other, Petro Divers, on the harbour next door to Restaurante Maritimo. They offer SSI certified courses and up to four boat dives a day for the qualified diver. There is also a Broadband Internet connection available free to their customers.
Horse Riding: There are two centres, both in the Mondrago Park. "Rancho Jaume" is only a 5 minute stroll along the road. You may notice the sign just before you arrive at Villa Kaspian.
Golf: There are 18 golf courses on Mallorca with 10 more planned, three of which are already under construction. By the time you read this they may be in use. The nearest is Vall d'Or Golf, just a fifteen minute drive (pun intended!) towards Porto Cristo. Seven other golf courses are within 45 minutes by car: La Reserva Rotana, San Antem West, San Antem East, Pula, Son Servera (9 holes), Canyamel and Capdepera.
Blau Resort: This Five Star hotel complex occupies the headland between Porto Petro and Villa Kaspian. Apart from it's excellent accommodation there is a Spa, Fitness Centre, Tennis Courts and other facilities. We're not suggesting that you stay there, but some of these facilities are available to day visitors.
Cala d'Or: If quaint little Porto Petro isn't enough for you why not strike out for the "hottest" place in the area. As well as it's beach and the marina, there are some very good
restaurants, bars and night clubs. Stroll along the marina and wonder at the yachts with such tantalising names as Sunseeker, Princess, Azimut and Fairline. Forget about the prices! You're on holiday. Sit and watch them sailing in and out at one of the many restaurants or bars that perch on the marina's edge.
An all year round holiday destination, Cala d'Or is busiest between April and October and it can be slightly overwhelming with persistant restaurant touts beckoning you into their establishments. But the restaurants do offer a good variety of worldwide cuisine. There are boutiques to cater for every taste. On the main road out of town there is Capabro, Mallorca's answer to Tesco. Maybe not offering the variety, but the food is fresh and the store has everything to offer for your holiday, including the things that you forgot to pack.
Why stop there. From Cala d'Or the roads lead out to all the attractions Mallorca has to offer. From its wild water parks, which are more towards Palma and Magaluf, to the Caves of Drac which can be found at Porto Cristo. The Island of Majorca is one of the most scenic and picturesque islands in the Mediterranean. You don't have to believe us. Come and see for yourselves. With it's diverse landscape, fantastic beaches, quaint villages and harbours, this island has everything to offer and once enjoyed, it will always make you want to return.
